The Farallons are a collection of dead volcanoes at the edge of a dead tectonic plate, at the edge of the continental shelf before it drops away to the abyss of the Pacific seafloor. Many native Californians believed that the dead, instead of going to an underworld, went to islands off the coast. If you spend a few minutes watching the Farallon webcam (courtesy California Academy of Science) you may understand why. Truly, the surface of Titan isn't much less inviting. They're about 20 miles off the San Francisco Coast, one corner of the infamous Red Triangle of great white sharks. Bonus if you see a seal getting chomped.
