It exploded a while back, much like Mount St. Helens, and the whole side of the mountain went hurtling across the valley. There's age, there's geography, and there's the fact that, while volcanism has continued from Lassen to Garibaldi (at least in the last few hundred years), Sutter Buttes have been taking a nap for 1.36 million years.Rebecca C.
